Are Carrots Really Good For Your Vision?

Remember growing up when your mom would tell you to eat your vegetables, especially carrots because they would improve your eyesight? Turns out she had a point. Here is that advice again, plus a few more ways to keep your eyes healthy and happy.

 1)    Eat Carrots

Carrots are loaded with Beta Carotene – something that is especially helpful in maintaining healthy eyes because it is an antioxidant that reduces the risk of macular (eyesight) degeneration. Here at ShadesDaddy.com we are advocates of anything that will support your eyes! So the healthier you eat, the better your eyes will feel. Duke University has found that eating carrots will provide plenty of Vitamin A, antioxidants like Beta Carotene, and minerals like Zinc, all which will help reduce the risk of advanced age-related eye degeneration.

2)    Eat your Greens

Besides taking vitamins, eating dark, leafy greens like spinach, kale and collard greens, will maintain your eyesight. Along with poor vision can come diabetes, poor hearing, obesity, high blood pressure, and increased chances for stroke. With a balanced diet that includes healthy portions of vegetables, especially greens, your eyes and body will thank you.

3) Wear Sunglasses

Everyone has to leave their home at some point in the day, and leaving your home means fighting the sun. Having a pair of sunglasses always with you will reduce the risk of any injury to your eye. The American Optometric Association even says that regular use of eye protection like sunglasses on the job, working around the house, and playing sports can prevent up to 90% of ocular injuries.

4)    Visit the Eye Doctor

We all know going to doctor can be something easy to forget, but going yearly to the optometrist will not only benefit yourself, but will improve your vision. Being sure whether you need a pair of Rx prescription frames will ensure the well-being of your vision. Periodic eye and vision exams are important to preventing loss of eyesight down the road so be sure to keep tabs on your eyes with the help of the professionals!

5)     Exercise and Relax Your Eyes

Like any muscle of the human body, the best way to improve them is by working out on a regular basis. A daily eye workout will better improve the overall being of your eyes. Try focusing your eyes on objects that are near to you, then objects that are far away. Repeat this process when you’re waiting in line at the grocery store or stopping for gas. Alternate this exercise a few times a week with simply sitting in a chair with your eyes closed for a few minutes at time, to block out all visual stimulation and light for a period of conscious relaxation.
