Summer is here, summer is here! Some of us wait all year for these months; some of us enjoy it year round. However, Summer just feels different than most months because a lot of people take these months off and use them to do…well…whatever. But for the rest of us who do work during the summer…we deserve a little indulgence too!

BEACH IT.
If you don’t like the beach you’re weird. Just kidding…well…maybe a little weird. Find any beach within miles of you and take some time off. There’s no better place to clear the mind and soothe the soul than the beach. There is something magical about ocean water – there really is. If you have to travel to get to a beach – so be it. Travel.

TRAVEL.
Some might argue that traveling is the best activity life has to offer. That may very well be true. Summer is a great time to take off and go travel and see the world or any place you haven’t seen for that matter. Make a list of all the places you’ve heard about or dreamed about, read travel blogs and plan a trip–go alone, go with friends, try something new or just search for ultimate relaxation–pick one and cross it off the list. There’s no time like the present.

POOL PARTY / BBQ.
Nothing says summer more than going to a pool party or having a BBQ with your friends. Those moments are priceless and one of the great activities of summer time.

CLIMB A FREAKIN’ MOUNTAIN.
Not for the lazy or the faint of heart, summer time is a nice time to get out there and just disconnect… although climbing a mountain or hiking in a crazy desert will probably get you lots of Facebook likes or Instagram shots. TAKE UP A NEW HOBBY.
Remember that time you said, “Oh yeah, I’m going to start doing that.” Well – you probably haven’t. Start now – if not now – when?

IF YOU HATE YOUR JOB, QUIT.
Super random but I’m throwing it in here because I don’t have that many other things to say but if you want to do something life changing and you’re stuck in a job you hate – quit. Life is too short to be hating what you do while the sun is shining, both literally and figuratively. It’s never been easier to become an entrepreneur with the resources available and the web at your disposal to find a job you want or start your own company if you feel you’re really good or passionate about something. Many styles of sunglasses are available with polarized lenses. This type of lens is popular with those who play outdoor sports, those who drive a lot, and people who spend time on boats or fishing. The reason people choose polarized sunglasses is because the lenses selectively cut down on glare from horizontal surfaces like water, playing fields, and the hoods and roofs of vehicles. Polarized lenses allow people to see more clearly when there is glare off horizontal surfaces, reducing eye strain and making hazards easier to see. Polarized lenses don’t dim the field of vision, so whether lenses are polarized or not is unrelated to how dark the lenses are.

Unpolarized vs. Polarized Light

Unpolarized light waves move in all different directions. Polarized light waves, however, move in a more orderly fashion. Polarized light waves are oriented in the same direction. If you have a pair of polarized sunglasses, you can see the effects of polarization by rotating the glasses 90 degrees, so they’re going up and down rather than side to side. At this angle, you’ll see glare off horizontal surfaces. But when you orient polarized sunglasses normally, as they are when you wear them, glare is reduced or eliminated. If you have two pairs of polarized sunglasses and rotate one pair, while holding the other in a fixed position, you’ll notice that almost all light is blocked. You can also get this effect by rotating a polarized lens in front of a flat screen monitor, as shown in the animation below.

How Are Light Rays Polarized?

Some naturally occurring crystals polarize light, but polarized sunglasses are created by using special lenses designed to block horizontally polarized light. First, polarized film is made from a material called polyvinyl acetate, or PVA, which is similar in thickness to the plastic wrap you use in the kitchen. The PVA is heated and stretched, which causes the chain molecules that make up the PVA to align. When the stretched, heated film is dipped into an iodine solution, the molecular PVA chains create long, parallel darkened lines that the unaided human eye cannot see. These lines block horizontally polarized light. The processed PVA is placed between two sheets of a material called cellulose acetate butyrate, or CAB, and this is affixed to the lenses of polarized sunglasses.

Disadvantages of Polarized Lenses

There are some people who should not wear polarized sunglasses, because they can block shadows that provide critical visual information people need for safety reasons. Advanced skiers and snowboarders should avoid polarized lenses, for example, because polarized lenses can make it harder for them to distinguish a small jump from a large hole due to blockage of shadows. Motorcycle riders should avoid polarized lenses as well, because they can make it more difficult to distinguish wet and dry pavement. Also, polarized lenses can make it hard to read liquid crystal displays, like the ones on gas pumps, but if you tilt your head, you can make up for this effect.

Who Can Benefit from Polarized Sunglasses?

Those who participate in outdoor activities like boating, fishing, golf, tennis, or baseball can benefit from polarized sunglasses. If you drive long distances, polarized sunglasses can reduce eye strain and improve visibility by reducing glare off your windshield and other cars. Some people who have had cataract surgery are advised to wear polarized sunglasses due to increased light sensitivity.

How Do Sunglasses Block UV Rays?

The color and degree of darkness provided by sunglasses have nothing to do with how well they block dangerous UV rays. Lenses are treated with a clear coating that blocks UV rays, and even standard prescription eyeglasses with no tinting use lenses that have been coated to block UV.

Only choose sunglasses that specify that they block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays. If sunglasses are labeled as having “UV 400″ protection, they offer good UV protection down to the shortest wavelength UV rays. Since UV radiation can damage your eyelids, corneas, lenses, and other parts of the eye, it’s essential that you choose sunglasses that block ultraviolet rays.

How Do Polarized Lenses Work?

When light is reflected off a surface like water, snow, or glass, the light waves “polarize,” which means that they tend to orient themselves horizontally, producing harsh glare and causing eye strain. Polarized lenses reduce the brightness of the glare without making the field of vision dimmer.

How Are Polarized Lenses Made?

Polarized lenses are made from thin, clear films that are heated and stretched, causing the long molecules that make up the film to align. The film is dipped in iodine solution, which creates long parallel, darkened lines that are invisible to the unaided eye. Then the film is dyed to the desired color. For placement on lenses for polarization, the film is oriented to block horizontal glare, and mounted on a sheet of another substance called CAB. Usually the polarizing film is laminated between two pieces of lens material.
