Statement Sunglasses Are What It’s All About This Summer (2013)

Fashions for spring and summer 2013 are trending bolder, brighter, and more fun than in summers past. Accessories, including sunglasses, are also bold for summer 2013, moving beyond their traditional role of protecting eyes from ultraviolet rays.

This summer’s hot sunglasses don’t shy away from making a fashion statement. Whether it’s color, shape, or prominent insignia, defining features of best-selling sunglasses are center stage this year. Here are some particularly relevant shades for summer 2013 and its bold, bright fashions.

1. Embellished Shades

You can find sunglasses with crystals and other embellishments, or you can add them yourself. The Gucci GG2875S features the fashion house’s signature bar and bit insignia at the temples. The effect is pure Italian glamour in a pair of sunglasses that won’t go out of style once the embellishment trend cools.

2. Colors

Lenses in recent years have flirted with color, with cool blues and pinks becoming trendy. However, for spring and summer 2013, frames in bright, bold colors are top sellers. They’re eye-catching, and a fun way to add color to otherwise sedate outfits or make yourself really stand out in a crowd. RetroSuperFuture makes a Lilac Purple basic Wayfarer that fits 2013 color trends perfectly. With gray lenses, you would be surprised how many outfits these shades go with. And lilac is flattering to many skin tones, from pale to dark.

3. Bold Shapes

Buy a pair of shades by Tom Ford, and you invest in style that always looks right. The Tom Ford “Whitney” with brown frames and gradient brown lenses has long been a top seller among celebrities (Kate Moss is wearing them in the top picture.), and they have a bold shape with an X-shaped nose bridge and side cutouts that make them perfectly on trend this year.

4. Two-Tone

Two-tone frames are very popular this year because they add subtle interest to what could otherwise be too timid a fashion look. The DKNY DY4072 is a classic “big sunglasses” style with frames in black and white and gray gradient lenses. They’ll look just as great while you’re headed to the local deli for your lunch break as they will on the beach with your favorite bikini.

5. Prints and Textures

Frame prints for 2013 go well beyond the perennially popular tortoise and Havana patterns we’ve long loved. One terrific example is the Versace VE4192. Frames are done up in an intricate Baroque black and white print, which are offset by classic gray lenses. It may take a bit of bravery to pull this look off, but you’ll definitely be someone everyone remembers.

Don’t be afraid to reach beyond your usual style this summer. Fashions are bolder than they’ve been in awhile, and your sunglasses should go along for the ride.
